The Kalamassery Development Industrial Estate was set up in 1960 by the initivate of Government of Kerala. The foundation stone for the first three units was laid by the Ernakulam District Collector, Mr. Krishna Kumar, IAS. This was the first industrial Estate setup by the Government of Kerala in this state as part of promoting small scale industries. The estate is functioning under the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Government of Kerala.

The District head office of the Directorate of Industries is located at Gandhi Nagar, Kadvanthra, Ernakulam.

Like any other initiatives, during the early days, very few entrepreneurs came forward to set up their industry in this estate. There was a surge in the setting up of industries from the year 1985 and now all 125 plots are allotted.

It is noteworthy to mention that a newly set up Women's Apparel Park is also situated within this area.

The entrepreneurs have grown with the age and most of the units are technologically advanced. The products manufactured by the units are being exported to number of countries apart from the nation vide usage.
